Report Estimates $750 Billion in Gold Is Hiding in America's Jewelry Drawers

Report Estimates $750 Billion in Gold Is Hiding in America's Jewelry Drawers

Americans may have a staggering amount of untapped wealth hiding in plain sight — tucked inside dusty jewelry boxes and forgotten drawers. According to Unvault’s newly released 2026 Jewelry Drawer Index, US households collectively hold an estimated $750 billion in intrinsic gold metal value.

The report estimates that the average American household possesses approximately $5,700 worth of unappraised gold jewelry. Yet many owners have little idea how much their jewelry is actually worth today, particularly after years of dramatic increases in the price of gold.

Unvault's analysis draws on World Gold Council data showing that Americans consumed approximately 7,050 tons of gold jewelry between 1995 and 2025. Because the company estimates that 75% of fine jewelry is never resold or recycled, roughly 5,288 tons of physical gold could still be sitting in American homes.

The potential appreciation is striking. Gold averaged about $279 per ounce in 2000, compared with nearly $4,600 per ounce in August 2026, according to figures cited by Unvault. That's a 16-fold increase in the underlying metal price.

As Unvault Co-Founder Nidhi Singhvi explained, the increase can be easy to overlook because jewelry doesn't come with the kinds of regular financial statements associated with stocks or other investments.

“Gold has been compounding quietly while pieces sit tucked away in jewelry boxes,” Singhvi said. “Jewelry doesn't come with monthly statements or ticker symbols.”

She offered a simple example: A gold chain purchased for $600 two decades ago may still feel like a $600 piece to its owner, even though the gold contained in it could now have a substantially higher intrinsic value.

Unvault says its estimate of the gold held by US households is based on five weighted demographic and economic factors: income distribution, age demographics, cultural affinity for gold, urbanization and homeownership. The company also analyzed more than 50,000 platform evaluations, finding that owners routinely underestimate the current metal value of their jewelry by a factor of three or more.

There's another problem: jewelry frequently doesn't appear on the family's financial radar at all. Unvault reports that approximately 62% of US jewelry owners carry no insurance on their fine jewelry, often because they lack current appraisals. Jewelry is also rarely included on household balance sheets.

The company says the concentration of this hidden wealth varies significantly by state. New Jersey leads its index at an estimated $8,784 in gold metal value per household, followed by Connecticut, California, Maryland and Massachusetts.

The takeaway isn't necessarily to start emptying the jewelry box and selling everything. Rather, Unvault's research suggests that consumers may want to take a closer look at what they've accumulated over the years. That forgotten gold chain, inherited bracelet or pair of earrings may be worth considerably more today than its owner realizes.

Unvault provides digital jewelry valuation and asset-management services designed to help consumers understand, document and track the value of their jewelry.
