Why Relationships Matter More Than Ever in the Jewelry Industry

Why Relationships Matter More Than Ever in the Jewelry Industry

Why Showing Up Still Matters

Every year, thousands of people from around the world gather in Las Vegas for what has become one of the most important events in the jewelry industry. This year was no different. After returning home from several days at the Luxury Show, JCK, Couture, and the Antique Show, I've spent some time reflecting on what makes these events so valuable.

On the surface, trade shows are about products. They are about discovering new jewelry collections, exploring emerging trends, finding new suppliers, and learning about the latest technology. Those things are certainly important. As a retailer, I'm always looking for ways to better serve our customers and improve what we offer in our store.

But the older I get, the more I realize that the true value of these events has very little to do with the products themselves.

It has everything to do with people.

This year's shows brought together more than 30,000 industry professionals from over 100 countries. Walking through the halls, you can feel the energy. Everywhere you turn, conversations are taking place. Relationships are being strengthened. New friendships are being formed. Ideas are being shared.

One of the great blessings of attending these events over the years has been the opportunity to learn from people who have already traveled the road ahead of me.

Years ago, David Nygaard took me under his wing and taught me the importance of attending industry events. More importantly, he taught me the importance of being seen. Not for recognition or status, but because relationships matter. Vendors want to know who they're working with. Other jewelers want to exchange ideas and experiences. Industry leaders want to invest in people who are actively involved and engaged.

Looking back, I can honestly say that many of the opportunities I've enjoyed throughout my career can be traced back to conversations that began at a trade show.

This year also provided an opportunity to spend time with renowned appraiser Mona Miller. Listening to her discuss antique jewelry and the many eras that shaped our industry was fascinating. From Georgian and Victorian jewelry to Art Nouveau, Edwardian, Art Deco, Retro, and Mid-Century designs, every period tells a story about the people who lived during that time.

As someone whose grandfather entered the jewelry industry during the Art Deco era, I find those connections especially meaningful. Jewelry isn't simply an object. It serves as a bridge between generations. It carries history, memories, and stories forward.

That's one of the reasons I enjoyed visiting the Antique Show this year. While many people focus on what's new, there is something special about looking back and appreciating where we've come from.

Throughout the week, I found myself returning to a word that has become increasingly important to me: Intentional.

Intentionality doesn't happen by accident.

You have to be intentional about learning. Intentional about listening. Intentional about asking questions. Intentional about building relationships. Intentional about serving others.

The same principle applies whether you're attending a trade show, running a business, raising a family, or building a community.

When I think about the opportunities the jewelry industry has provided over the years, I'm filled with gratitude. This business has allowed me to travel the world, visit diamond mines, meet extraordinary people, and witness firsthand the craftsmanship that transforms raw materials into treasured heirlooms.

Yet the greatest gift has never been the jewelry itself.

It's the people.

The friendships.

The mentors.

The lessons.

The stories.

At David Douglas Diamonds, we often say that we don't simply sell cold metal and hard rocks. We help celebrate life's most meaningful moments. Every piece of jewelry represents a story. An engagement. An anniversary. A milestone. A memory.

The same is true of our industry.

Behind every diamond, gemstone, and piece of jewelry is a story worth telling.

As I reflect on another week in Las Vegas, I'm reminded that showing up still matters. Being present still matters. Relationships still matter.

And when we approach life with intentionality, amazing opportunities often follow.

Thank you for joining me on this journey through A Century of Luxury & Legacy. I look forward to sharing another story with you next week.
